    May Historical Events:

    • May 20th, 1927 – Charles Lindbergh set flight from Roosevelt Field in Long Island, NY, bound for Paris, France. When he touched down in his plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, 33.5 hours later, he made history as the first nonstop, solo flier to complete the transatlantic journey. He was given nicknames like “Lucky Lindy” and the “Lone Eagle” by the papers celebrating this achievement. Though today it feels totally ordinary to fly across the ocean, Lindbergh’s flight was only 24 years after the Orville brother’s first successful flight.
    • May 1st, 1941 – America’s breakfast staple, Cheerios, hit the shelves. Called “CheeriOats” until a 1945 dispute with Quaker Oats, General Mills sold these plain oat o’s across the country with great success. The next flavor, Honey Nut, didn’t come around until 1979! As of 2020, there were 20 flavors of Cheerios available to purchase, including apple cinnamon, frosted, and even pumpkin spice.
    • May 27th, 1977 – Star Wars became an overnight success after it opened on Memorial Day Weekend, 1977. Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia, was quoted by Time magazine as saying, “It wasn’t like a movie opening…it was like an earthquake.” The original trilogy wrapped up in 1980 and 1983. Today, there are 12 films in the Star Wars franchise, and their total box office revenue sits at $10.318 billion!
