  • June 17th, 1885 – The Statue of Liberty arrived in New York City Harbor. A gift symbolizing friendship and hope between two nations, the gleaming bronze statue arrived from France on the ship Isère. Lady Liberty’s iconic figure greeted immigrants arriving to Ellis Island, hoping for refuge and to build a better life. “The New Colossus,” the 1883 poem by Emma Lazarus, captures the legacy of Lady Liberty in the famous lines, “Give me your tired, your poor, /Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
  • June 19th, 1910 – The very first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington. Sonora Smart Dodd, the originator of the holiday, was raised by her single father along with five siblings after her mother passed away. Her dad, William Jackson Smart, was born in June, which is why the month was chosen. In 1972, President Nixon made Father’s Day a national observance for the third Sunday in June.   • June 4th, 1919 – The Nineteenth Amendment, which granted women the right to vote, was approved by the United State Senate.
